– Leading In Constant Change

Every November comes a chance for change.  Election Day brings the opportunity to review the issues, make your decision and cast your ballot.  Maintain the status quo?  Usher in change? Your vote is the mandate.

Business leaders across America don’t wait until November to cast their votes; they do it daily. With their work place as their voting booth and the company’s issues as their slate, the decisions they make are the mandate their employees will follow now and into the future.  How they approach their daily votes will define their legacy of leadership.

Sue Bethanis, CEO of Mariposa Leadership, Inc. believes that “Great leaders act as catalysts for change — never settling for the status quo.”  Bethanis, author of Leadership Chronicles of a Corporate Sage shares three aspects that can help you leave a positive, long lasting legacy for your organization.

  1. Establish change as a constant - Great leaders are proactive.  They grab the wheel and steer agilely around each curve in the road, navigating their organizations toward positive changes.
  2. Frame the debate - The language of leadership is a powerful tool.   A clearly defined vision generates the perception within the organization.  Great leaders make sure theirs is the vision that acts as generator.
  3. Be a visionary – Strong leaders are business’ “point guards.”  They see the entire company landscape as their basketball counterparts see the entire court.  This singular ability to see beyond themselves sets them apart.

It’s critical to lead in the present, have an understanding of the past, and maintain a clear vision for the future.  “If you do,” says Bethanis, “the legacy you leave behind will be a reminder of the issues that shaped your company and the leader that voted them in– to the benefit of all.”
